Image captures/recording (from/for your screens)

There are lots of free (and not-free) softwares that you can use for screen/image capture or screen-recording. Try out a couple. Look for the ones that look simple and easy to use.

Here is a list of some options. Some Android options too.

Command/shift/4/space bar (at the same time) on Macs to take a photographic image of your screen. More here.

You could also check out Screencast-o-matic (Annette showed some outputs from this during the kickoff keynote). Or Camtasia is also popular, but it costs.

There is some new smart phone screen recording functionality; you can search online to find out whether your smart phone has that capability, e.g. for iPhones.

As part of your vlog exercises, you will be asked to replace your voice-over or audio. There are lots of ways to do this (see above & below for a couple of ways to search out options).

And if you want to do some video editing as part of your responses to the exercises, you can use iMovie or one of several free softwares for PCs, or if you’re really keen, check out Davinci Resolve, with the basic version recommended by technicians at U of T, specifically because:

  • It is free
  • Resources are available for software usage
    • Youtube tutorials
    • Website also includes instruction page
  • It can run on PC and Mac
  • It has a simple “cut” interface as well as a more advanced “edit” page
    • If students wish to do anything more complex, this software has full features.
